The Demands of the Demonstrationanswer.pephost.org/site/PageServer?pagename=ANS_S24index&JServSessionIdr006=c7jnqzyby1.app6aWhile we organize around the demand for the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of the U.S. from Iraq, it is essential that the movement show the connection between the war in Iraq and all the other fronts of the U.S. government's war for Empire, including the struggle of working and poor people in the United States. The demands for the demonstration include: From Iraq to New Orleans, Fund People's Needs - Not the War Machine Stop the War in Iraq End Colonial Occupation from Iraq to Palestine to Haiti Support the Palestinian People’s Right of Return Stop the Threats Against Venezuela, Cuba, Iran & North Korea U.S. out of the Philippines U.S. out of Puerto Rico Bring all the troops home now Stop the Racist, anti-Immigrant and anti-Labor Offensive at Home, Defend Civil Rights Military Recruiters out of our schools & communities Go to the following link for complete information regarding the protest including transportation to and from the rally; answer.pephost.org/site/PageServer?pagename=ANS_S24index&JServSessionIdr006=c7jnqzyby1.app6a

Do you think Bush and his gang are sane? Whatever they have been doing has been planned and implemented to obtain their objects. America has to answer for this. And Americans should make the change at the top, democraticaly by impeaching the President. Yes I am aware that most Senators and Congressmen have been compromised and its difficult. But it is upto the American public to make them understand that their country comes first. Was it JFK who asked " ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country" Now more than ever Americans have to answer that call

I wholeheartedly agree with you,Nathan. However,I think Jay poulsen is right, that Congress and the Senate are hopelessly compromised.Impeachment? It's just not gonna happen with these crooks on Capitol Hill.kinda like going after a grizzly bear with a slingshot. If every incumbent congressman and senator(notable exceptions:Byrd,Boxer,Pelosi,Brown)were booted out on thier ass next election,we might get it done.I cringe at the thought of what damage bushmonkey could do to us in the meantime. It sucks, but unlike my pet president,I cannot replace reality with optimism. I share Mr. Moyers view that we should have a Constitutional Referendum. To make d**n sure nothing like this catastrophic misadministration EVER happens again...

How about this, wrapping around all of your points, or at least a good many of them for a protest sign (and by the way do you know if we will be able to have 'sticks' on which to put our signs?---or will it be like the innauguration wherein sticks were outlawed?

Since both houses are in control of the GOP, any action, in ANY way, is so unlikely as to be left out of discussion. The only way Americans can make a change is to concentrate on the 2006 elections. I am heartened that there will be a huge swing in the house, and maybe we WILL see some spine fron the DEMS.

I won't bet too much on Dems. Like I once said, "they have become well versed in the fine art of rolling over" by now. I once had a lot of faith in Dems.
But nothing wrong with hoping.

What I say here is probably going to be jumped on, but I think the greatest chance of this demonstration having a real effect in the USA is if the police riot, and it turns very ugly, maybe deaths many injuries and arrests. If this demonstration can make these evil men fearful, they will respond with disproportionate force, and this will bring the nations people to fight for change finally. If we look at past civil disobedience in the USA, from Civil Rights, to anti-Vietnam, to womens suffrage, it was over-reaction by our government which ignited the fires to make these movements successful, so my hope is actually that they will panic with the White House surrounded and attack the protesters. These people will be the utmost hero's, and would quickly be joined by many millions in cities around the nation. I sound callous, and I'm not trying to be, I lived in the VA suburbs of DC in the 60s and 70s, and I saw what happened, it happened to me, and it was the end of the Vietnam War, even though it continued for another several years. Raging youth is what we need, and hopefully raging adults to stand with them.

What is the plan for September 24? A permit has been obtained for a mass rally on the Ellipse in front of the White House on Saturday, September 24. The White House/Ellipse rally site opens at 7:00 am. Buses will begin arriving and contingents will begin assembling early in the morining. Groups will be setting up literature and informational tables. This will be a great opportunity to learn more about different social justice groups who are all coming together for the joint activities at the White House. Come early to the White House/Ellipse to visit the exhibits and tents! (See below for more information on tabling and contingents.) Starting at 10:00 am at the Ellipse we will have music and spoken word. At 11:30 am there is a scheduled joint rally. After the joint rally, we will march. The A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition has secured a permit from the Metropolitan Police Department for the mass march on September 24 that will take the demonstration directly in front of the White House on Pennsylvania Ave. This is the first time in many years that a march permit has been secured for a mass assembly march and protest on Pennsylvania Ave. right at the doorstep of the White House. (See below for the full march route.) The rest here; answer.pephost.org/site/News2?JServSessionIdr011=nqsspr0dq1.app8a&abbr=ANS_&page=NewsArticle&id=6793&news_iv_ctrl=2121

FYI. Members of the New York Police Department marched into a crowd of 150 gathered in Union Square, Mon 9/19, and yanked the microphone away from Cindy Sheehan.

Along with many members of this forum my feelings go out to those marching this Saturday, the 24th, all my wishes are for their success. For our success.
And I wish I could be with them this Saturday.
And yet... While the demonstrations in the 60s may have helped bring an end to the US invasion of Vietnam, it’s not easy to conclude that this somewhat similar demonstration in the 21st century will not only end the Iraq atrocities but bring about the miracle of the acceptance of the just demands of the demonstration organizers.
For one thing, while Bush’s popularity may have fallen lately, the middle class are not confronted with a draft of their young sons. It’s the Nat’l Guard, and the enlisted aliens, who will become full-fledged citizens (if not corpses), because of their “patriotism” in raping Iraq. And the mercenaries, the Blackwell and other security personnel. Soldiers of fortune, professional killers. So there’s no great outcry against the war on the part of middleclass America. Maybe there will be a million people shouting No to the Iraq war and Yes to the “demands of the demonstration” on Saturday. Maybe not.
I don’t know if writer “rabiesrabies’ has been recently bitten by a mad dog, but I do know that his picture and mine of the present situation , and the past, have nothing in common.
His “raging youth” of the Vietnam War era---well I was one of them, I guess. We "stormed“ the pentagon. Well, not really. The tear gas was a bit too much. There were no casualties, no deaths, not in my area, anyway. No deaths—not like Kent State. Maybe the “raging youth” he saw were some disturbed adolescents, or perhaps, agents provocateurs (look it up in a good dictionary); they’ve been around for some centuries in dictatorships---Bush and Blair and Sharon use them in their own countries as well as in occupied lands.
Perhaps “rabiesrabies” is just misguided. Let’s hope so. But the fact is that there is, apparently, plenty of space in various detention centers throughout the U.S. to house not only victims of Katrlna but any of those mad enough to riot during the demonstration on the 24th.
And the mercenaries of George Bush are ready to pounce on any of those who stand in the way of the New American Order. Isn’t it an interesting coincidence that King George III employed mercenaries to subdue the American colonists, and that King George Dubya IV employed mercenaries to subdue the New Orleans victims of Katrina?
But of course, Bush may turn out to be “lucky.” Hurricane Rita may just steal the show from 24 Sept, as Katrina did for Cindy.

The Washington, DC, Mass March and Anti-War Rally September 24, 2005 was initiated and organized by two antiwar coalitions, A.N.S.W.E.R. (Act Now to Stop War & End Racism), on behalf of the September 24 National Coalition, and United for Peace and Justice. "Starting on Saturday, September 24, three days of protest, grassroots lobbying, and civil disobedience are planned for Washington DC to protest the Iraq war and the militarization of US society. Given the way public sentiment has turned against the war, this could easily turn out to be the largest pro-peace event in US history." Schedule The schedule (http://www.pastpeak.com/archives/2005/08/september_2426.htm): Sat., Sept. 24 - March, Rally, and Operation Ceasefire (http://opceasefire.org/) Concert (http://www.unitedforpeace.org/article.php?id=3026). Sun., Sept. 25 - Interfaith Service (http://www.unitedforpeace.org/article.php?list=type&type=90), Grassroots Training. Mon., Sept. 26 - Grassroots Congressional Lobby Day (http://www.unitedforpeace.org/article.php?id=3074) and Mass Nonviolent Direct Action and Civil Disobedience. More rally and event links (http://www.legitgov.org/peaceprotest24.html), including the World Bank protest, is posted on Citizens for Legitimate Government website. The timing of Hurricane Rita is most unfortunate for the Washington Demonstration; which I'm positive will be huge in the number of people attending. Any chance of good coverage of this event will be overshadowed by hurricane coverage. And, Bush won't even be in Washington. How fortunate for the adminstration.

100K people expected at war protest WASHINGTON - The anti-war movement, which has been gathering support in recent months, will get a major test of strength today as organizers hope to convene the largest peace rally in the nation's capital since the Vietnam War. Small demonstrations have been common since the Bush administration began contemplating war with Iraq nearly three years ago. But throughout the summer, support for the conflict, as measured by various polls, has dropped, and peace activists hope a large demonstration of opposition at today's event will show that the movement has turned a corner. "It's becoming clear to everyone that not only was this war based on a false pretext, it is not winnable," said Brian Becker, national coordinator for the ANSWER Coalition, one of two umbrella groups organizing the rally. "The anti-war sentiment is now the majority." Today's "Bring the Troops Home Now" rally is the anti-war groups' first opportunity to demonstrate that a significant numbers of protesters are willing to travel to Washington to show their frustration. Becker said organizers expect 100,000 at today's protest. He said about 1,000 busloads from every state in the contiguous 48 will arrive in Washington for the weekend's activities. Groups from Japan, Korea and the United Kingdom are also expected. Solidarity marches are planned in San Francisco and Los Angeles. "Our focus is sharp," said Bill Dobbs, media coordinator for United for Peace and Justice, ANSWER's co-sponsor. "We want to put the president and Congress on the hot seat." www.billingsgazette.com/index.php?id=1&display=rednews/2005/09/24/build/nation/57-war-protest.inc
